On Saturday night Owen suddenly wanted to sleep in his big boy bed. We have only tried once before and since that didn't go very well, we've stuck to the crib ever since. But Matt decided that if wants to try again, then let's try again. I was not so optimistic! I really love how easy Owen has been to put down the last year and I'd hate to rock that blissful boat.
We set the timer per usual and I was nervous because Owen started saying "I don't want to go nite-nite" which he has NEVER said. They went in and read books and then when it was time to lay down, he started to say "I don't want to go nite-nite" again (I started to panic)! Matt decided to lay down with him and after about 45 minutes of moving around and trying to get Matt's attention (who kept with the mantra "close your eyes, it's nite-nite time") he finally fell asleep. AND he slept until 6:15am and woke up with a big proud smile on his face (sounds early, but that's standard around here)!
So at nap time today, I was up and I was nervous. I don't have the patience that Matt has in these situations and I've been so freakin' tired lately that I thought I'd fall asleep and Owen would slide down the slide and start to play and I'd wake up hours later to humongous mess. However, we did our routine and I layed down with him and after about 15 minutes he was asleep. Clearly not in a deep sleep, because every time I went to get up he'd put me in a head lock and say "lay down mom-mom"! Finally I broke loose and he briefly woke up, but I just patted his back and said "nite-nite" and left. He slept for well over 3 hours!
Our challenge for tonight and tomorrow is to NOT lay down with him, that's a habit I don't want to have to break. He likes his bed and he likes to sleep, so I'm hoping it'll go smoothly.
Wish us luck!
